Midnight June 30, 1997 marked the end of Britain’s ninety-nine year lease of Hong Kong from China. Today Hong Kong is a “Special Administrative Region of the People’s Republic of China” (SAR) and receives special economic privileges.
Hong Kong as we know it consists of the Hong Kong island, Kowloon, the New Territories and 235 outlying islands. 40% of the land is actually countryside. The City’s population hovers at 7 mn, and at 6,000 people per square kilometer.
Hong Kong is one of the most densely populated places in the world.
There are many plans for the further develpment of Hong Kong into a major travel destination: Disneyland Asia will open here in a few years time!
